He is currently the Executive Director of the International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA). Prior to joining ISRA he was an Assistant Professor at the Kulliyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). In the period 2002-2004, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
At present, he is a member of Bank Negara Malaysia Shariah Advisory Council, member of Shariah Advisory Employees Provident Fund (EPF), member of Yassar Limited (Dubai) Shariah Advisory Board, member of EAB (London) Shariah Advisory Board, Chairman of Islamic Advisory Board of HSBC Insurance Singapore, Shariah Advisor to ZI Syariah Advisory Malaysia, member of Shariah Advisory Council International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM) Bahrain, Shariah Advisor to Dar al-Takaful Dubai, Committee member of AAOIFI Shariah Standards, Bahrain and other Boards locally and internationally. In addition, he is also a member of the Board of Studies of the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, International Islamic University Malaysia. Dr. Akram holds a B.A. Honours degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and Legislation from the University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan and a Ph.D. in Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh) from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom.
He has presented many papers related to Islamic banking and finance and other fiqh topics at the national and international levels and has conducted many training sessions, particularly on Islamic banking and finance, for different sectors since 1999. He is a registered Shariah Advisor for Islamic Securities with the Securities Commission of Malaysia and has acted as Shari’ah advisor in the issuance of several sukuk. In addition he is also a prolific author of academic works specifically in the areas of Islamic banking and finance. He is the recipient of the Zaki Badawi Award 2010 for Excellence in Shari’ah Advisory and Research.
He is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ISRA Consultancy Sdn. Bhd. He is also a senior researcher at the International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) and a Professor at the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF). He attained a PhD (Islamic Law) from the University of Birmingham, UK, 1999, M.A (Fiqh & Usul Fiqh), University of Jordan, Jordan, 1995, B.A. (Shariah), Islamic University Medina, Saudi Arabia, 1991 and Postgraduate Diploma in Shariah Law & Practice, International Islamic University Malaysia, 2001. Previously, he was an academic staff member in the Department of Fiqh and Usul Fiqh, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (IRKHS), International Islamic University Malaysia.
He was then seconded to Al-Madinah International University as Deputy Rector (Academic Affairs) for two years. He is an author of two books and has published a number of articles in the local and international journals. He has been a Chevening Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, United Kingdom. Prof. Dr. Ashraf Md Hashim has vast experience in providing Shariah views on retail and investment banking products, sukuk structuring and unit trusts. He was also actively involved in advising Takaful and Retakaful companies such as ACR Retakaful, ARIL and Takaful Malaysia. Currently, he is a member of Central Bank of Malaysia (BNM) Shari’ah Advisory Council (SAC) and National Fatwa Council of Malaysia. He is also a Shariah Committee member of the Securities Commission and the Chairman of Shariah Committee, Bursa Malaysia.
He also serves as a member of Technical Committee of IFSB for matters related to retakaful. In addition, Prof. Dr. Ashraf is also a Shariah advisor to a number of Islamic financial institutions in Malaysia and abroad.
He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California. He is a professor of Islamic Economics at King Abdul Aziz University. He is an expert at the Islamic Fiqh Academies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Muslim World League. Dr Elgari is a member of the Shariah boards of many Islamic banks and Takaful companies including that of the Dow Jones International Islamic Fund Market.
He also sits on the Shariah Board of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) and is a member of the advisory board of the Harvard Series on Islamic Law.
He is a senior researcher at the International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA). He received his bachelor’s degree in Islamic Science (Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh) from the University of Algiers, his masters in Quran and Sunnah from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), his PhD in Islamic Law & Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh and Usul Fiqh) from IIUM and a diploma in Human Sciences from the same university.
Prior to joining ISRA as a senior researcher, he worked as a lecturer at the Islamic Science University of Malaysia from 2003 to 2004, and was an assistant professor and associate professor at the Department of Islamic Law (Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws) IIUM from 2004 to 2009. Dr. Said is the editor-in-chief of ISRA International Arabic Refereed Journal for Islamic Finance.
He is the Chairman for the Shariah Advisory Committee for Affin Islamic Bank and a Shariah committee member of MNRB Retakaful. Dr. Said has published three books, four chapters in books and several articles in refereed journals. He has also presented several papers in international conferences including the International Fiqh Academy of the OIC and the Islamic Fiqh Academy of the Muslim World League. He supervised several PhD candidates and was appointed as external examiner for masters and PhD theses. He also developed the curricula for four courses at IIUM and has conducted many training sessions in Islamic banking and finance.
He is currently a researcher at International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) and Head of Islamic Banking Unit, ISRA. Prior to joining ISRA, he served Center for Foundation Studies, International Islamic University (IIUM) for 8 years as lecturer at the Department of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences. Apart from serving ISRA, he also serves as Shariah adviser to Maybank Islamic, Chairman of Shariah Committee for Bank Pertanian Malaysia (AGRO Bank), Shariah adviser to MNRB Retakaful and Takaful Ikhlas. He is also a registered Shariah adviser with Securities Commission, Malaysia. He has PhD in Shariah from University of Malaya with specialization in Fiqh, Usul al-Fiqh and Islamic Finance, Masters of Shari’ah from the same university and Degree in the same field from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He has also studied Shariah in Jordan under prominent Jordanian Shariah scholars. He was conferred the Shariah Scholarship Award by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) for his PhD study in Islamic finance. As researcher, he involves actively in researches related to Islamic finance amongst others are Ibra’ and Its Implementation in Islamic Banking from the Perspective of Maqasid al-Shari’ah, Parameter of Hiyal (Legal Stratagem) in Islamic Finance, Personal Financing: An Alternative to Bay’ al-‘Inah, Fatwa in Islamic Finance: A Comparative Study Between Malaysia and GCC and Book on Islamic Legal Maxims and Their Application in Islamic Finance. He has presented many academic papers at various conferences, locally as well as overseas.
She is the Director of the Research Affairs Department of the International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA). Previously she was a tutor at the Faculty of Judiciary and Law, Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM). Before that, she was a part-time matric teacher at Matriculation Centre, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
She has published research papers in a variety of journals. Dr. Marjan is currently Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Committee (SAC) for the Malaysian Building Society Berhad and a member of the Shariah Committee for Maybank Islamic Berhad (MIB). Previously, she was a member of the Shariah Advisory Committee (SAC) for Malaysian Building Society Berhad (MBSB) and a member of the Group Shariah Committee (GSC) for RHB Islamic Bank. Dr. Marjan obtained her Master and Doctoral degrees in Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Heritage (Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), after attaining her bachelor’s degree from the same university in 1998.
Her areas of specialization are issues of ijtihad (intellectual reasoning), Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh), Islamic laws of transaction (fiqh al-muamalat) and Islamic criminal law (fiqh al-jinaya).
